Liturgy, or "work of the people," is structured common prayer. In the Episcopal or Anglican tradition, as in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and other traditions, our Holy Eucharist is embedded in actions we take in unison as we worship together. These actions, known as our liturgy, have been performed in concert with a very large community of people all over the world for many centuries. Our liturgy has been called the glue and glory of our denomination.
When first encountered, the Episcopal liturgy can seem foreign and complicated. But persevere. Liturgy can be a discipline that takes time and patience to grow into. But when we join a community that does liturgy, it is not uncommon to find that gradually, and sometimes quite suddenly, God changes us. That is because the liturgy surrounds not only the transformation of bread and wine, but the transformation of ourselves, our community, and our world. In our prayer, our work, and our life, we are restored to unity and become instruments of God's holy mission.
At St. Stephen's our liturgy is the jewel in the crown of our worship service. It is as holy and beautiful as we can make it. Our 10:30 Sunday worship strives for good music, poetry, drama, and a sense of grace. We seek beauty in our appeal to all the senses, using live flowers, candles, incense, natural light and other natural elements to enhance our worship experience.
We invite you to explore and experiment with the resources of Christian spirituality at St. Stephen's Episcopal church. We understand that what feeds one person may not feed another. But as you shape a spiritual life that fits your own individuality, we hope you will try out the various weekly church services at St. Stephen's. As you join us in worhip and prayer, we hope you will find comfort and joy, and that you will consider making St. Stephen's your church home.
